How to boot from CD on Windows 10

Prepare yourself for this: You might not be able to. It depends on your computer, it seems, which things will get you to BIOS and allow you to boot from CD. If your computer is like mine, this will work. It worked for me on a Lenovo ideapad 100.

I'm guessing you're trying to boot from CD in order to install Linux or another OS.

Windows makes it very difficult to enter BIOS (Here's how to do it), but even then, you might not even be able to get your computer to boot from CD or USB.

I'll put the instructions you can try below.

But you might want to first try to boot from USB (here's how):

Enter BIOS (here's how).

Now that you're in BIOS, boot from CD by altering BIOS:

1) Go to "Boot" in the menu
2) "Windows Boot Manager"
3) "Add boot" (if you don't see the option, do this:)
3.1) "Security" in menu," find "Secure boot" and "disabled" it
        "Fast boot" and disable it
         Enable "Launch CSM" if you can (I couldn't)
         Boot Mode = Legacy
         Boot Priority = Legacy First
         In "Exit Tab," do "OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS or Disabled"
         Under "Boot" then under "Legacy" move the DVD and USB up in the list with Fn+F6
3.2) "Fn+F10 to save changes and exit
4) You may not have access to some of these, so you might have to repeat the steps to get back into BIOS then do them again.

Don't be disheartened if this does not work for you. My guess is that Windows has done pretty much all they can to make it hard / impossible for regular people to do. I suspect many people spend hours then give up. I figured all these steps out from what other people online did and it worked for me (CD, not USB). It was that last step that allowed me to boot from CD, but I think the last step required the first 7 (or most of them) in order to do. Anyway, I was able to boot from CD and it launched my Linux .iso.

How to install Linux beside Windows

For those of you who want to keep their Windows OS and everything they have saved and installed there, but also use Linux when they want to, you can have both on one computer. It's fairly common, actually. What a lot of people do is gradually make the transition away from Windows, logging into it less and less and using Linux more and more, but without burning any bridges to their old computer abilities on Windows. From your Linux system, you will also be able to access the files on your Windows computer. In order to do this, you will need a Linux CD (a Linux .iso file burned to a DVD). Install it with r-click installer.
