How to uninstall programs?

What do you want to be able to do on your computer? Here's what I need: Edit movies, edit images, edit sounds, play videos, view images, play sounds, Stream vlogs, record video of desktop, do screenshots with a hotkey, monitor processes, rename and bulk rename files,

Here's how I do that with Linux ...

Linux already views images and plays sounds. The other stuff requires program installs.

First, find out what Linux you have installed. You probably have a basic Ubuntu version. I have Zorin 12, for example, but that is the same thing as the mainstream Ubuntu Debian. So when I find things to install, I look for the Ubuntu install (which is the most common).

How can I make and edit movies?

On Windows I used Sony Movie Studio, which cost around $100 I think and I liked using. However, they don't have a Linux version.

First I tried Cinelerra free software. I tried it and didn't like it, after using Windows Movie Maker and Sony Movie Studio, which are more intuitive.
Download at:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/heroines/files/cinelerra-6-x86_64.tar.xz/download
(CV means "Community Version" and is considered less buggy)
Install instructions:
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2013/07/install-cinelerra-video-editor-on-ubuntu-13-04-12-10/
Time for my install: less than 5 minutes

Then I tried Blender:

Blender, free software, has a Linux version.
Download:
https://www.blender.org/download/
Install instructions:
http://tipsonubuntu.com/2015/04/03/install-blender-2-74-ubuntu-14-04linux-mint-17/
Time for my install: less than 10 minutes

However, while Blender seemed a great program, rendering chroma key (green screen) was extremely slow. You can't just add chroma key to your video editor on Blender, it seems; you have to do it in "compositor" and export it (correct me if I'm wrong).

I then tried Kdenlive:

Kdenlive install:
https://kdenlive.org/download/
Time for my install: around 15 mintues I think

Kdenlive needs VLC (which I would have installed anyway):

VLC install:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ubuntu.html
Time for my install: less than 15 minutes

Kdenlive seemed to do what I wanted. I could add a chroma key to my greenscreen pretty quickly. And it appeared to be like a simple video editing program with a not-bad user interface.

OBS

Instructions to install OBS on Linux:
http://www.webupd8.org/2015/06/how-to-stream-to-twitch-from-linux.html
NOTE: My mic wasn't picked up automatically. I had to click + and "Audio Input Capture (PulseAudio) and then it recorded my internal mic.
My USB 3.0 HDMI Capture also wasn't immediately accessible on Linux. I had to all intel software for the driver (see below).

Audacity (sound editor)

Audacity install:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/608187/how-to-install-audacity-2-1-0
Secondary source:
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2015/04/install-audacity-audio-editor-2-1-0-in-ubuntu-from-ppa/
To record system audio (the sounds played inside my computer), I did this:
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/03/install-pulseaudio-with-built-in-system.html
But doing that (while doing a few other processes, so I don't know what caused it for sure) my system froze and crashed. I restarted it, and my Zorin start menu and tool bar were replaced by a different GUI (which still works). However, Audacity did then record system audio.

Simple image editor (like Paint): Gnome Paint

Install:
sudo apt-get install gnome-paint
Source:
http://mygeekopinions.blogspot.ca/2011/09/how-to-install-gnome-paint-in-ubuntu.html
Time for my install: 10 seconds

Unfortunately, Gnome Paint doesn't have image resize. Or gradient fill.

So I found two others: MTPaint and Pinta, and came across another interesting-looking app called MyPaint.

MTPaint:

Pinta:

MyPaint:

Pinta install: https://pinta-project.com/pintaproject/pinta/howto/installing-pinta
Time for my install: a minute

I didn't end up installing the others, because Pinta looked like it would possibly do what I wanted.

Adblocker:
I don't use adblocker. I believe in not hurting people who publish content for me to access free!

VOIP (text, audio calls, video calls, like Skype):
I went with Wire (My article about Wire)
I tried to install by command line, using this:
http://www.titus-stahl.de/blog/2016/08/04/creating-an-ubuntu-package-of-wire-an-encrypted-messenger/ ... but it didn't work. I had to install through the download (from the Wire page):
https://wire.com/en/download/

Remote access
I used Teamviewer, just like I used on Windows
Installation by command line:
https://community.teamviewer.com/t5/Knowledge-Base/How-do-I-install-TeamViewer-on-my-Linux-distribution/ta-p/4351
This didn't work for me, so I had to use the download install:
https://community.teamviewer.com/t5/Knowledge-Base/Installation-of-TeamViewer-on-a-Ubuntu-system/ta-p/45

Screenshots with hotkeys
I used Screenhunter on Windows. On Linux I tried Shutter first, but it didn't have hotkeys that I could find. I then tried Lighscreen, using the download install.
https://github.com/ckaiser/Lightscreen/releases
But Lightscreen provides no instructions on how to install it on Linux once you download it. It doesn't install when you click the exe.

Common issues that can be solved quickly:

Linux won't mount my SD card:

This worked for me: Ctrl-Alt-T to open command line, then paste sudo apt-get install exfat-fuse exfat-utils

My USB 3.0 Capture HDMI (dongle) won't work on Linux:
Type in "additional drivers" in your Linux start menu and enable something that might look like "Unknown: Unknown."
